When graphic designer Mike Winkelmann started producing a drawing a day in 2007, he was simply looking for a way to improve his art skills. At best, the resulting "Everydays" project would help him promote his freelance work, which includes creating concert visuals for the likes of Justin Bieber and Katy Perry. "It's a bit surreal, because (digital imagery) wasn't really something that I pictured, in my lifetime, being able to sell, " said Winkelman, who goes by the name Beeple, in a video call from his home in South Carolina ahead of the sale. "So it (has) come out of nowhere. But at the same time, I also really feel like this is going to be the next chapter of art history."

At the center of this explosion in transactions are non-fungible tokens, or NFTs. Acting like virtual signatures, they address concerns that digital art's value is diminished by the ease with which it can be copied or lost.

How Nfts Are Fueling A Digital Art Boom

While an oil painting can only be displayed in one place and has a definitive owner, a digital image, video or gif can be infinitely duplicated and enjoyed on screens around the world for free. This has often posed problems for prospective collectors, who don't know how to price digital art and fear it will lose resale value. But now, NFTs are offering two things that the physical art market has always depended on: scarcity and authenticity.

NFTs are built on blockchain technology, which -- just as it does with Bitcoin -- offers a secure record of transactions. This digital ledger serves as incorruptible proof of ownership, meaning that "original" artworks and their owners can always be identified via the blockchain, even if an image or video is widely replicated.

A "fungible" asset is one that is that can be replaced with another identical one of the same value, such as a dollar bill, while non-fungible ones, like NFTs, are tied to unique goods and are not mutually interchangeable.

Like bitcoins, the tokens can be kept in a virtual wallet. They can then be sold or traded, often gaining value in the secondary market. This makes NFT artworks similar to physical ones -- or any other real-world asset, according to Duncan Cock Foster, co-founder of Nifty Gateway, the platform behind Beeple's and Grimes' recent multi-million-dollar sales.

"We have systems for collecting paintings, and we have systems for collecting sculptures. But until now, people hadn't figured out a good way to collect digital art -- and NFTs allow you to do that, " Cock Foster said on a video call, adding that buying tokens is easier and "a lot more accessible" than traditional art collecting.

On Nifty Gateway, artists set the number of editions for any single artwork by deciding how many accompanying tokens will be made available. This can range from one-offs, where a piece is sold to a single collector, to open-edition "drops, " where tokens are made available for a limited period of time.

The sale of Grimes' "WarNymph" collection, for instance, allowed up to 9, 999 purchases of various artworks within a seven-minute window. Several of the creations were listed for just $20 per token, some of which are now selling for thousands of dollars.

By connecting artists directly to collectors, NFTs effectively cut out galleries and other traditional gatekeepers. While Cock Foster would not disclose the size of Nifty Gateway's cut, he claims it is "far less" than what a gallery would usually take.

NFTs can allow creators to receive a cut on all future transactions -- on Nifty Gateway, this is typically set at 10% -- breaking with the centuries-old model whereby artists do not directly benefit when sold works grow in value over their lifetimes. (For instance, when a David Hockney painting sold for $90.3 million in 2018, setting an auction record for a living artist, the British artist didn't receive a single cent from the sale. His dealer had sold it for just $18, 000 in 1972.)

So, while Beeple made less than $67, 000 when he originally sold his "Crossroad" animation, he pocketed a further $660, 000 when the initial buyer sold it on.

The collector behind the $6.6 million "Crossroad" sale, Pablo Rodriguez-Fraile, said that supporting creators is one of the unique benefits of investing in NFTs. While there is money to be made, and plenty of speculation happening in the crypto art market, the 32-year-old said that collecting digital works is about more than money.

"I try to look into the life and career of the creators. Setting up your room on campus for the first time can be a fun and rewarding experience. And yet, you may not be sure what to bring. Not only are there rules to follow, but you’ve also probably heard many suggestions that ultimately aren’t necessary, and some that will really help. You’ll want to make your space your own, while also building in some comforts from home. Our summer Communications Fellow and New Hampton School alumna Madison Adler ’17 shares her experience and tips to help you get started. One of the things I was most excited about when coming to boarding school was decorating my new room. I spent hours looking online and in magazines planning what I thought would be the perfect dorm room—only to realize later on that many of the things I thought I should pack I either didn’t need or couldn’t have for safety reasons.

By my second year at New Hampton School, I was an expert in bringing what I needed without overpacking. To make your new dorm room the best it can be, here are some of my “Do’s and Don’ts” when packing for boarding school.

Decorating the walls of your new room is one of the best parts of moving in. To avoid accidental damage from tape or push pins, easy-to-use wall mounting materials like Command Strips are a must. Although it may be tempting to liven up your room with fun scents, air fresheners that use heating elements (candles, incense, wax warmers, etc.) are not allowed in dorm rooms for safety reasons. “They're sitting on the bus for over an hour a day, and when you learn that the emissions are concentrated inside the bus, it’s scary, ” said Monacella, who volunteers with the climate advocacy group Mothers out Front.

So she teamed up with other moms in Fairfax County, Va., to do something about it. The school district, which is the second largest in the country, agreed to replace its 1, 650 diesel buses with electric ones by 2035.

The infrastructure package proposed by the Senate and the White House on Wednesday offers significantly less funding for electric school buses than what President Biden was seeking.

And without a federal infusion of cash and incentives, advocates fear zero-emissions school buses—which can cost three times more than those with internal-combustion engines—could be distributed unevenly, potentially leaving behind low-income families and students of color who already bear the brunt of environmental pollution.

Monacella of Mothers out Front said the details around funding, and where charging infrastructure is placed, can determine whether electric school buses are distributed equitably.

She pointed to a Virginia pilot program in which Dominion Energy has deployed 50 electric school buses as part of broader vehicle-to-grid plan. Monacella said she worries that the utility may not prioritize low-income school districts.

“Dominion will help pay for some buses; maybe our state grant fund will help pay for some buses; and, you know, the more, the better, ” she said. “But the way the Dominion program was set up, they wanted to own the batteries and the charging infrastructure, and they wanted to say where it could be sited. So it didn't matter where the highest asthma rates were; it didn't matter the lowest air quality. It just mattered what worked for them.”

A Dominion spokesperson said the utility has deployed its 50 electric school buses in geographically and economically diverse districts and intends to weigh equity concerns when expanding its vehicle-to-grid program.

“Every student in the commonwealth deserves access to a safe, emissions-free school transportation, and our goal is to help school districts make that transition, ”spokesperson Samantha Moore wrote in an email.

As health impacts related to climate-fueled events like extreme heat or wildfires become more common among children, parents are increasingly calling on their elected officials to take action.

“If your child is struggling to breathe because of wildfire smoke due to climate change, to have the opportunity to put a child on an electric school bus and not be exposed to that additional pollution is critical for these families, ” said DelloIacono of Moms Clean Air Force.

Curbing emissions from school buses would eliminate as much as 5.3 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year. And while electric buses are currently more expensive to purchase than their diesel counterparts, schools could save hundreds of thousands of dollars on fuel and maintenance costs, according to a recentreportled by the U.S. PIRG Education Fund.

“So a new infusion of federal funds is so important because it can really help with financing the upfront costs, ” said John Stout, a transportation advocate with U.S. PIRG.

Last year, a school district in Sacramento, Calif., became the owner of the largest electric school bus fleet in the country, with 40 zero-emissions buses. A county in Tennessee secured the state's first all-electric school bus last month. In Maryland, Montgomery County Public Schools announced a contract earlier this year to replace all of its diesel buses with electric ones, starting with 326 buses over four years. The list goes on.

A recentpollfrom the American Lung Association found that 68 percent of American voters, across all major demographic groups, support Congress' investing in zero-emission school buses nationwide.

This month, over 100 local school board officials across the country signed aletterto Biden and Congress calling for a $30 billion federal investment over 10 years to replace half the nation’s school bus fleet with electric buses.

Several lawmakers have introduced similar legislation. A recentmeasurefrom Reps. Tony Cárdenas (D-Calif.) and Jahana Hayes (D-Conn.) and from Sens. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) and Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) would authorize $25 billion to transition the nation’s school bus fleet over 10 years, giving priority to low-income and front-line communities.

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) also floated abillearlier this year, which was originally introduced by former Sen. Kamala Harris in 2019, that would enable school districts to replace diesel buses with electric ones.

While many uncertainties remain—like how best to install charging infrastructure—Monacella said electrifying the nation’s school bus fleet is a crucial step not only to protect children’s health, but also to reduce carbon emissions. There are four times more school buses on the road than public transit buses.

“Climate change is happening all around us. It’s beyond crisis time, ” she said. Electrifying school buses “is just one piece of the puzzle, but I think it can have a big impact, and it’s something I can do to try to make a difference.”
